Some of you may be wondering, "What is he talking about? PGT?"
Although I hear the term PD used with great enormity, it has become almost a transparent cliche. If you are like me, I find studying various things quite fascinating, so spend a lot of time reading and studying online.
A great mentor of mine, though he may not realize it, takes a lot of his own time to jot down his thoughts and his philosophies (of business), so that it helps other entrepreneurs who are developing their skills and their businesses. Many of the things he discusses in his posts (which are private, only to those associated with his business group on What's App) are related to his PGT, so it inspired me to talk about it here.
PGT stands for "Personal Growth Time," and it really helps me put in perspective a lot of the things I study from, such as articles over the Internet, inspirational books such as The Magic of Thinking Big, or even gleaning moral insights from studying NIV Bible, ESV Bible, or The Message. When people think I may be "wasting" my time sitting at my computer surfing, or even "dad's working again," mentality, I am actually devoting (purposefully) to my time I spend to improve myself, not just in mathematics or business, but in ALL areas of my life (because we are FAR from perfection).
As you commit purposefully to improve your thinking, to improve your habits, to push your mind further than your picket fence allows, do not feel ashamed of studying and reading, as long as it does one thing a man by the name of Dave Severn would say, to call you to action.
Along with that I caution you who you pick as mentors and those you "follow," especially in social media. There are some I used to esteem because of their intelligence and success with their practices, but because they could not separate their politics from their profession, I had to unfollow, unfriend, or mute, because I did not want to be associated with that frame of thinking, nor did I want to get caught in a world wind debate in a platform I felt designated towards teaching or business. Am I guilty of this? Absolutely. However, I try to leave such debate or ranting to my personal accounts, not ones I reserve for either education or business.
Finally ask yourself two questions, when you do find resources to study. First question is, "How will I benefit from this?" If it's just nice to know, but does nothing to develop you, either put it in your leisure time "basket," or do not waste time with it (you can find yourself endlessly scrolling/searching). The second question, "When will I implement what I've learned?" Notice I did not say, "will I implement," because sitting on knowledge does nothing, nor does it help anyone else. My whole point of this blog was originally to communicate math, but also to improve in ways that betters oneself (which can be used in multiple disciplines, one which also includes math).
Til I chalk again,
Mr. Shel
